2010 VW 1 Liter Photo

2010 VW 1 LITER2010 VW 1 LITER CAR

As outrageous as the idea of a production 1L/100km (235mpg) car sounds, more reports have emerged confirming the ultra-frugal car is in fact in development and that it could be on the market by as early as 2010. At last year's Frankfurt Motor Show senior VW exec Ferdinand Piëch claimed the car would be available by the end of the decade and a month later, CEO Martin Winterkorn backed up the claim as well as providing some of the production details. The latest reports indicate the car might not be a single-cylinder petrol design like the concept, but a two-cylinder diesel-electric mild hybrid.

Discussing the car's sales potential last year, Winterkorn stressed that the 1-Liter “would not be a best seller” and thus will only be produced in limited numbers. Its body will be constructed from carbon fiber, plastic and magnesium. Top speed with the one-cylinder 0.3L engine of the 2002 1-Liter concept was expected to be around 120km/h with average fuel consumption around the 1L/100km mark (235mpg). Those numbers aren't expected to change much with the shift to the diesel hybrid design. The change is expected to add drivability and low-end acceleration to the car, although its lightweight will also make easy work for even the small engine and motor combination.

The vehicle's weight is estimated to be a mere 300kg (660lb) thanks to its small size, tandem seating configuration and lightweight construction. That would make the car a very difficult structure to secure in the event of an accident, especially with the panoramic fighter-jet style canopy over the occupants and the very low profile of the car. VW seems confident that it can get the car produced and certified for on-road use, however.

Pricing is expected to fall somewhere between €20,000 and €30,000 ($31,400 to $47,100). Assembly is tipped to take place in VW's prototype shop, which can produce 1,000 cars per year at full tilt, reports CAR.

The version from 2002 ended up doing even better than its target fuel efficiency, requiring just 0.89L/100km (achieving 264mpg). Whether the new diesel hybrid will achieve similar results remains to be seen. Click here to read our previous story on the VW 1-Liter. Read More...

BMW is rumored to have plans to revive the 8-Series name for a potential “four-door coupe,” much like the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class. New 8-series would compete closely with the new Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class, Aston Martin Rapide and Porsche Panamera.

Beginning of the year BMW placed Gerhard Richter in charge of development of its new Gran Turismo model, which is based on the popular CS concept car. New model will be called either simply GT, short for Gran Turismo or 8-series. Most likely the car will get the previous 8-series models name so that BMW can position it as the highest, most luxurious and expensive model.

This new GT/8-series model will be the first non M-series car to be built by the performance division. BMW M President, Herr Willisch said that the CS “It’s a car that doesn’t have any resemblance to the other cars built by BMW AG, so it was decided to give the project to us.”

New 8-series will have a larger wheelbase and sportier chassis than the 7-series, though it will be based on the underpinnings of the new 2009 7-series.

Expected engines will be a V8 twin turbo engine or a 6.0-liter naturally aspirated V12. New 8-series will be introduced most likely in 2010 as a 2011 year model. Still a long time to go with lots of spy shots and rumors. As BMW has not started the testing of the new 8-series we don’t have any spy shots yet, what we have are two artist renderings of the new 8-series. Enjoy! Read More...

2011 Ferrari Sport Cars Ferrari Enzo Concept By Peter Simon Design

2011 Ferrari Sport Cars Ferrari Enzo Concept By Peter Simon Design
Based on the Credo E-Bone form language, Peter Simon designed an incredible Ferrari concept. This designer takes the Italian dynamic and organic, soft shapes that are closest to nature. Inside and out, this vehicle is meant to radiate energy and power. The inspiration is no less than animal and human bones, creating a dynamic supercar that’s highly energetic.
This is the Ferrari Sport Cars Ferrari Enzo, the cars that never ever stops, but appears to sit in time even as it flies down the highway. In the event that our fantasy does come true, concept cars designer Peter Simon already has an idea of what he thinks the Enzo successor is going to look like.

Featuring a far more aggressive nose and front end than the real Enzo, Simon’s concept work is the personification of a car that certainly poses a design identity that’s all its own.
According to Simon, the inspiration behind his work was taken from – get this – human and animal bones. Simon took his inspiration, weird as it sounds, and combines with the flair of Maranello to create a striking study that boasts of swooping angles that we’ve never seen from an actual Prancing Horse.

It’s not hard to imagine what the world would be like if Ferrari did come out with a successor to the venerable Enzo supercar. As one of the meanest and most awesome supercars to come out of Maranello in history, the 2011 Ferrari Sport Cars Ferrari Enzo Concept By Peter Simon Design certainly has no equal – that is unless a successor to it comes along down the road.

2012 Porsche 911 Turbo

2012 Porsche 911
2012 Porsche 9112012 Porsche 911 Turbo

With a market launch just around the corner, new details have emerged about the 2012 Porsche 911.

As usual, the 911 will be an evolution of the previous model. Keen-eyed observers will notice new lighting units, Panamera-style side mirrors, and a revised rear wing. A closer look will reveal the car is longer and wider than the 997, but only slightly.

Inside, the cabin will to get a major upgrade thanks to styling elements from the Panamera and Cayenne. Our spies haven't gotten close enough to snap pictures, but trust us, they're trying.

The car will continue to ride on a steel-intensive platform, but several weight saving measures will allow the car to weigh 1370kg (3020 lbs) - 45kg (99 lbs) less than today's model. Porsche has also modified the engine mounting points for improved weight distribution and better handling.

Under the hood, the Carrera will be outfitted with a revised 3.6-liter engine that produces 365 hp (272 kW / 370 PS) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque. The mid-level Carrera S will come with an updated 3.8-liter with 415 hp (309 kW / 421 PS) and 325 lb-ft (440 Nm) of torque, according to Autocar. Both will be mated to a six-speed manual or an optional seven-speed PDK.

To improve fuel efficiency, all 911s will come with an engine stop/start system and regenerative braking. These additions should allow the Carrera / Carrera S to consume 12% less fuel in city driving.

While a 911 hybrid is expected, eventually, an Autocar source dashed rumors of an EV by saying "We are investigating pure electric drive systems, but no decisions have been made on their production future." Read More...
